About Radon
Radon is a radioactive gas that has been found in homes all over the United States. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and is literally sucked into your home from its negative pressure through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Radon can also enter your home through well water. All of middle Tennessee is listed as a High probability area for radon gas by the EPA. View EPA Map for Tennessee here.
Any home can have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements. In fact, you and your family are most likely to get your greatest radiation exposure at home where you spend most of your time.
Most real estate agents/brokers do not recommend radon testing. One of the reasons is that they have not had any formal training in regards to radon and its health concerns, they just don’t know about the problems. We have found levels well over the 4 pCi/L (pico curies per liter) EPA action level in all areas of Middle Tennessee. Some of the highest levels in the state have been found in Davidson, Williamson and Rutherford counties. Readings in the 6 pCi/L to 10 pCi/L are very common.
Bill Collins is an EPA Certified Radon Measurement Provider (#104163) and is listed on The National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) and is a member of the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA).
To test for radon gas, we use state-of-the-art Sun Nuclear electronic monitors. Unlike the old fashion charcoal canister tester, these testers check for radon continuously over a 48-hour period and give hourly readouts of radon levels throughout the duration of the test. All of our devices are calibrated on a yearly schedule as required by the EPA and NRPP.
