Nashville TN, Inspector Finds Poorly Installed Pull Down Stairway

March 3, 2010 by Bill Collins

Most builders fail to read the mounting instructions when installing pull down stairways leading up to the attic. They are most often found installed with sheet metal screws which do not have the sufficient side to side sheer strength.  Most installation decals found on the inside of the ladder require a minimum of 16 16D nails that should be applied to all sides of the ladder. This can be a safety issue when carrying boxes or large items up the ladder to store in the attic.

Franklin TN, Inspector Discovers Decayed Cast Iron Plumbing Pipes

March 2, 2010 by Bill Collins

Cast iron plumbing drain pipes have been around since the early 1900’s.  They are often found in a decaying state and will eventually need to be updated and replaced with today’s PVC poly vinyl chloride plastic pipes. The pipe view in the picture was found in a 1900 house and has split and decayed to the point the entire plumging system needs replaced.

Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

March 2, 2010 by Bill Collins
Filed under Local Events & Happenings

Presented by Tennessee Repertory Theatre  March 20-April 10, 2010

Mark Twain’s timeless classic sweeps us down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, bringing to life favorite characters from the novel-the Widow Douglas and her stern sister, Miss Watson; the uproarious King and Duke, who may or may not be as harmless as they seem; Huck’s partner in crime, Tom Sawyer, and their rowdy gang of pals; Huck’s drunken father, the sinister Pap Finn; the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes and her trusting family. Propelled by an award-winning score from Roger Miller, the king of country music, this jaunty journey provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana.

Original Tennessee Rep Production: 1991/1992 Season

The Tennessee Rep production of Big River will be a companion piece to Nashville Children’s Theatre’s production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (fall 2009). Both productions are featured as a part of Nashville’s “One City, One Author” celebration of Mark Twain presented by the Nashville Public Library.

Nashville TN, Home Inspector Locates Missing Flashing

February 7, 2010 by Bill Collins

Poorly installed shingles were found on roof in Nashville.  Any time shingles intersect with an exterior wall, step flashing should be installed under each roll of shingles and counter flashing should be installed on the exterior wall that overlaps the step flashing. The shingles picture will allow rain water to penetrate behind the shingles and enter the structure.

Nashville TN, Inspector Locates Improper Clearance on Power Lines

February 5, 2010 by Bill Collins

Power lines are sometimes found on older home where they do not have the proper clearance needed between it and the roof line.  Power lines should be at a minimum of 18″ where they cross over a section of roof.  This is needed to protect the house from the electrical wires and to allow workmen to safely service and replace the roofing shingles.
