Unsafe Patio Guardrails Discovered by Nashville TN Home Inspector

Patio decks on older homes are often found with horizontal railing as part of the guardrail.  This will allow infants to climb through the railing or use them as a ladder causing an unsafe condition.  Current standards require vertical railing with no more than 4″ between each baluster or space. This type of guardrail is also required on any stairway with 4 or more steps.
